While James Cameron was getting recognized for something, I was completely ignoring him in favor of admiring Zoe in her sunglasses. Helloooo movie star.

LOCAL NEWS IS ALL OVER MY ASS. THE PRICE OF BEING NEWSWORTHY.

So...I was kinda watchin' the Romulan drill fight scene, and just got to the part where Sulu says "Olson had the charges." Well, remembering that our fine, headstrong, little redshirt got sucked up into it, wouldn't the energy from the drill have ignited the charges and blown it to smithereens? Just a "scientific" query...

ALSO! for those of you who really, really like Two Steps from Hell, they're coming out with two albums soon...TO THE PUBLIC!

I just found out that if you pre-order the game, you get a pre-order-only bonus Constitution-class ship. A.K.A. THE ENTERPRISE. Also I called GameStop because when I selected the in-store pickup option, it still said the shipping date was Feb. 2, but they said I would actually be able to pick up the game on the 2nd (not that it would be shipped to the store on the 2nd, which it what I was afraid it might mean). A digital copy is also available for pre-order.

My friend (who's not on LJ. Yet.) has been playing the beta version and it's awesome. You get to fight the Borg.

SO I've made a new community where we can organize a guild fleet: [info]gqmf_st_online. Check it out!

'Avatar' designer on Jim Cameron, banshees and those nagging 'Delgo' comparisons

You want "Avatar" coverage? You can read about the sci-fi epic right here at Hero Complex until you turn blue in the face. Our 30-day countdown to the most expensive movie in Hollywood history is now at the halfway mark. Today Gerrick Kennedy has a Q&A with Neville Page, the creature designer for "Avatar" who created the dragon-like banshees that fly through the skies of Pandora. Page's previous credits include "Cloverfield," "Watchmen" and the J.J. Abrams reboot of "Star Trek."

GK: How did you get on board with James Cameron?

NP: I had some friends who were working with him before on a different project. He had put out some feelers for his great adventure and I thought, “What the hell?” At that point, I didn’t really have the portfolio [for creature work], my background was more industrial design. He liked the fact that I didn’t have a creature-centric background. I guess it was a unique approach. We started working at his house in Malibu [in May 2005], which was a treat to say the least.

GK: You’ve worked with J.J. Abrams twice now, including “Cloverfield” where everything was centered on this mysterious monster. What are some challenges when working on films shrouded in secrecy?

NP: You get used to it. At first you get frustrated. And there is reason to be secretive. “Cloverfield” for example, there was no saying that I was working on it. It had so many code names. “Avatar” was the same way. Towards the end of it I started working on “Cloverfield.” With “Avatar” it went on for five years and it’s like “Come on,” you want to share what you’re working on. But you don’t want to spoil the fun, or the excitement for anyone. Or worst of all, ruin your career.

Oh Shatner. Never change.

"SHATNER! What is it? A man. An incorporeal force imbuing all souls, and all things. An amuse-bouche. A way of being. A story in our January issue. (Titled "SHATNER!"—how could it be otherwise?) And, of course, a way of speaking. A very emphatic way of speaking. Words that are utterly mundane coming from the mouths of mortal men ("The guacamole is decent here, you should try it") becoming electrified when they emerge from his."

Audio selections from the interview (and The Shat's dulcet tones) right over here at GQ

Including such gems as:
Shatner, asked about his position on guns and gun ownership, speaks instead of the day he wound up barreling down a California highway on his motorcycle with his clothes half torn from his body and blood pouring from his head (and several other parts of his body)—and with a teddy bear in tow.

Shatner explains/defends the emotive ginormity he brought to his portrayal of James Tiberius Kirk.

Shatner explains "sabotage"—how to pronounce it, and how to avoid it.

Shatner, now 78 years old, proclaims his intention to attain six-pack abs.

My boyfriend and I both love Voyager -- we finished season 7 last night! -- and we love music too. Thanks to the GQMF member of this community who posted the download of the sheet music, we were able to play this together. I'm going home for winter break and he's staying up at school, so there won't be any more like this for a while, but we're hoping to do more themes, and other songs too! What do you think?

Thank God, it's Friday! Perfect time to relax a little bit. And what better way to relax than with Star Trek related goodies?

Here is the weekly post where members can post links to their own Star Trek-themed fan videos, art, fiction, crossover macros, and anything else that you feel best belongs right in here.

We recommend that you comment with a link to your journal/youtube/DeviantArt/etc, where we can all bust a gut laughing at your talent, as opposed to posting all the pictures/videos/etc in a single comment.

The big 'X' Day is coming...so for my family (especially for me and my longtime Trekkie mom) it means the big STAR TREK vs STAR WARS room goes up! (PS: STar Trek always wins!) It started out as just the tree 'cuz of all the Hallmark ornaments my family accumulated over the years...but like a tumor the madness cannot be contained!

This holiday marks the 5th year anniversery of this new family tradition, so now I share to you images of the traditional Trekmas room in celebration of all you fantastic GQMFers for bringing so much awesome and smiles to my life.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my family actually has two trees for X-Day, the 'Nerd Tree' and a 'Normal' (aka traditional) tree for the parents that we use for prezzies by the fireplace. Even though I tell them I'm perfectly fine with just using the Trekmas tree for all things glorious and X-Mas...*shurgs* I'm just saying!

Here is the headline: "Star Trek Stops Women From Becoming Computer Scientists."

Here is the story: )

Here are the issues:
1) Despite the headline, this article has almost nothing do to with Star Trek
2) The writers of this article appear to know nothing about Star Trek fans, who (a) are usually quite clean (can't show off that uniform if you look gross) and (b) a lot of whom are actually women, as this community amply demonstrates
\3) Worf on the television in the background is the least nerdy thing going on in that photo
4) Star Trek itself is not what's causing women to "not want to be computer scientists" -- and even if it were, there were also video games and comic books in the room, so it'd be just as easy to blame either of them
5) thousands [citation needed, whatever] of women have pursued careers in the sciences BECAUSE OF STAR TREK (just ask Nichelle Nichols or Kate Mulgrew, they hear it at EVERY con they go to)

In conclusion: dumb headline. Suck less, Wired.

edit: the study itself seems to be valid and to have been carried out with due rigor -- it's mainly Wired's writeup that irks me.
